Lithuanian GDP to advance by 2.5 pct in 2015: PM

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Lithuanian economy is projected to grow by 2.5 percent in 2015, the country's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said Tuesday.

In an interview with local radio broadcaster LRT, he said the Lithuanian economy is expected to get certain boost from employment of the EU structural funding later on this year.

"We expect GDP growth to advance in the second half of 2015, however, it is obvious that we have not reached the previous level of exports yet which was recorded before Russia's embargo," Butkevicius noted.

The Lithuanian economy contracted the most among the EU member states in the first quarter of 2015, compared with the previous quarter, data from Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, showed earlier in June.

Decrease in exports, especially to Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) members, are being mentioned by analysts among the most important factors negatively affecting Lithuania's economy.

The European Commission projects the Lithuanian GDP to grow by 2.8 percent this year, while the experts at Lithuanian central bank expect a 2 percent growth. Endit
