One passenger was killed and another in critical condition after a Shinkansen bullet train was stopped on Tuesday as white smoke was spotted inside one of its coaches, Japanese media reported.

Several others were injured in the incident, Kyodo News reported, citing local firefighters.

The train was bounded for Osaka from Tokyo station and stopped between Shin-Yokohama and Odawara stations in Kanagawa Prefecture now after the incident that took place at around 11:30 local time.

A passenger may have doused self with oil in the train, Kyodo said, citing the operator. Endi
