Tokyo stocks plunged 2.88 percent on Monday, with benchmark Nikkei stocks index seeing its biggest points drop this year on concerns over a Greek debt default.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 596.20 points from Friday at 20.109.95. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 42.21 points, or 2.53 percent, lower at 1,624.82.

The turnover was 2,657.37 billion yen (about 21.62 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING -- China's stock market saw sharp fluctuations on Monday despite unexpected rate cuts from the central bank on Sunday.

The major Shanghai Composite index closed 3.34 percent lower at 4,053.03 points. The Shenzhen Component Index lost 5.78 percent to close at 13,566.27 points.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, slumped by 7.91 percent to end at 2,689.76 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 696.89 points, or 2. 61 percent to 25,966.98 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,617.78 and 26, 631.51. Turnover totaled 186.13 billion HK dollars (about 24.02 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dropped 29.77 points, or 1.42 percent, to 2,060.49 at the close. Trading volume stood at 499.3 million shares worth 6.14 trillion won (5.46 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- Australia's market has wiped off approximately 30 billion U.S. dollars, its biggest loss since early may, on fears of a Greek default and an exit from the eurozone.

Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 slid 2.23 percent down to 5422.5 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index tumbled 2.16 percent to 5416.6 points.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.72 percent lower on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index dropped by 54.67 points to 7567.38. The all-share index went down by 27.25 points, or 0.63 percent, to 4331.41.

Trading volume reached 1.18 billion shares worth 5.90 billion pesos ( 130.70 million U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 2.39 percent on Monday with the weighted index down 226.47 points at 9,236.10, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 93.33 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.01 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 85.49 points on Monday, down 0.03 points, or 0.03 percent, against the previous closing session.

A total of 47.610 million shares worth 600.396 billion Vietnamese dong (27.79 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Monday, a decrease of 21.77 percent in volume and 21.37 percent in value against the previous closing session.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Monday up 0.06 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 0.88 points to 1,392.89. A total of 1,523 shares worth about 8 million Lao kip (about 1,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 591.75 points on Monday, up 10 points or 1.72 percent against last Friday's closing session.

About 121.736 million shares worth 2.189 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (101.01 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 620.22 points, up 11.3 points or 1.86 percent.

A total of 61.655 million shares worth 1.331 trillion VND (61. 44 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Monday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 40.43 points, or 0. 82 percent, to a level of 4,882.58 on Monday.

Some 190,980 transactions were booked, involving 6.32 billion shares worth 3.96 trillion rupiah (about 296.27 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 40.72 points, or 1.23 percent, to close at 3,280.18.

A total of 1.26 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 02 billion Singapore dollars (761 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Monday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,691.92 down 18. 55 points or 1.10 percent, and the Emas was at 11,691.52 down 141. 39 points or 1.21 percent.

Turnover increased to 1.68 billion shares valued at 1.71 billion ringgit Malaysia (451.72 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.35 billion shares valued at 1.43 billion ringgit Malaysia ( 379.41 million U.S. dollars) on last Friday.
