1st LD: Eurogroup rejects Greek bailout extension request

Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem said on Saturday afternoon that 18 Eurogroup finance ministers have rejected Greece's request for an extension of its bailout program so that it could put the creditors' proposals to a popular vote on July 5.

Dijsselbloem made a short statement at a press conference after emergency meeting with his eurozone counterparts. The second meeting will immediately continue without Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

"I am regretful to say that the program will expire on Tuesday night," he said, adding "That is the latest date we could reach an agreement."

The creditors have offered new proposals to the Greek side on Thursday but Greece later rejected.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced early Saturday in a television address that his government has suggested to put creditors' Thursday proposal to a popular vote on next Sunday. Endit
