UN chief slams attack against peace mission base in Somalia

Xinhua, June 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" an attack by Al Shabaab militants against an African Union Mission to Somalia ( AMISOM) base in Somalia, according to a statement of Ban's spokesperson.

Dozens of soldiers were killed after Al Shabaab overran an African Union base in the town of Leego, Somalia Friday. There were as many as 50 bodies, some decapitated, the Guardian reported, citing unverified account of witnesses.

"The Secretary-General pays tribute to the Burundian peacekeepers who lost their lives helping to bring lasting peace to Somalia. He conveys his deepest condolences to the government and people of Burundi," said the statement.

The secretary-general reaffirmed the commitment and resolve of the United Nations to continue to work with the African Union and AMISOM to support the people and government of Somalia on the path to peace, said the statement.

AMISOM is a peace keeping mission operated by the African Union in Somalia with approval by the United Nations. Enditem
