The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) President Joseph Kabila on Thursday inaugurated a new terminal and control tower at the N'Djili International Airport, a major airport in the capital Kinshasa -- the first extension for it in 58 years.
The director general of the Congolese Airports Authority (RVA), Bilenge Abdalllah, said work on the new facilities lasted three years and was carried out by SS Lavalin from Canada, Alpha Airport company from France and China's Sino Hydro.
The project cost about 79.5 million U.S. dollars with the African Development Bank financing 86 percent of the funds and the RVA contributing 14 percent.
"The new terminal which will have capacity to handle a million passengers per year, has been equipped with all necessary tools for handling passengers and luggage," Abdallah said.
Since its establishment in 1956, the N'Djili International Airport has not undergone any extension or modernization, hence its poor state today. Endi
