China allocates 260 mln yuan to flood-hit areas

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) on Friday allocated 260 million yuan (41.9 million U.S. dollars) for disaster relief work in areas hit by torrential rains and floods.

The fund will be allocated to Hubei and Hunan provinces in central China and Guizhou Province in the southwest, to relocate affected residents, reconstruct buildings, provide daily living assistance, and compensate the families of those killed in the disasters.

Earlier, the ministry and the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction initiated a grade IV emergency response mechanism for torrential rain and floods in the three provinces, sending work teams to disaster-hit areas.

A grade IV response, the lowest in the country's emergency response system, means a 24-hour alert, daily damage reports, and dispatching money and relief materials within 48 hours.

The central government also allocated 20,000 quilts to Hunan, and 3,000 tents, 5,000 quilts, 5,000 folding beds and 5,000 sets of folding tables and chairs to Guizhou.

Torrential rain in central and southwest China over the weekend has left seven people dead and thousands displaced, according to local authorities. Endi
