Australian authorities seize 50 kg methamphetamine

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australian authorities have seized 50 km of methamphetamine, known as Ice, with an estimated street value of 50 million Australian dollars (38.63 million U.S. dollars) , following a police operation in Sydney.

New South Wales (NSW) Police on Friday said two men, aged 33 and 41, believed to be part of a large criminal syndicate, have been arrested and charged with large commercial drug supply and refused bail.

NSW Police Acting Drug Squad Commander, Detective Acting Superintendent Jason Smith, said the seizure would prevent tens of thousands of individual deals from reaching NSW streets.

"This seizure represents another important victory in the community's battle against Ice, preventing countless deals from reaching the streets," Smith said. "We all know just how destructive this drug can be, and our commitment to tracking down those responsible for dealing it remains as steadfast as ever."

Last week, investigators from the NSW Police Force's Drug Squad received information concerning a large quantity of crystal methamphetamine which was allegedly being stored in Sydney by a criminal syndicate.

Detectives made a number of inquiries over the ensuing days, leading to the searching a vehicle on a Sydney street on Wednesday.

Upon searching the vehicle, detectives located a suitcase containing approximately 10 km of Ice sealed in a number of packages bearing an Asian-themed design.

Search warrants were subsequently executed at three properties in the Sydney suburbs of Burwood and Canterbury and a truck in the suburb of Campsie.

Police found an additional 40 km of Ice and 300,000 Australian dollars (231,771 U.S. dollars) in cash at the raids. Endi
