British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon on Wednesday met with visiting King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss ideas on tackling the Islamic State (IS or ISIL), regional issues and defense cooperation.
"The meeting today further reinforces the UK's commitment to the security of the Middle East and allowed the defense secretary to recognize the key role Jordan is playing in the anti-IS global coalition which is supporting the Iraqi government," the British ministry of defense (MoD) said in a statement following the meeting.
Jordan remains a key ally for Britain in the Middle East as demonstrated by the increased support provided as challenges from Syria and Iraq increase, it added.
Britain has a "particularly strong defense relationship" with Jordan with the delivery of training courses, short-term training teams in-country, a number of major exercises each year, and a program of capacity building, according to MoD.
Britain is part of an international coalition working together to dismantle and destroy the threat of IS, also known as Islamic State, Da'esh or ISIS.
British forces have been conducting air operations in Iraq against IS targets since last year, as part of the international coalition's efforts to support the Iraqi government in the fight against IS extremists. Endite
