1st LD: Twin bombings target Syria's Hasaka city, causalities feared

Xinhua, June 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two car bombs exploded in a short succession in Syria's northern city of Hasaka on Tuesday, leaving unknown losses or causalities, the official Syrian TV said.

The first explosion rocked the Sinalco roundabout, while the second pounded the Kahraba roundabout in Hasaka, the TV said, adding that initial speculations indicate the presence of causalities and wounded people.

The reasons behind the blasts are still murky.

The Kurds in Hasaka are in large groups in that area, and the blasts could be a response from the Islamic State (IS) group against the fresh progress the Kurdish fighters have made in the northern province of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the IS.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Kurdish fighters of the People's Protection Units captured the town of Ain Issa in northern Raqqa from the hands of the IS militants.

Tuesday's victory capped fresh progress the Kurdish fighters have made in northern Syria against the IS. Endit
