Germany's Under-21 international Johannes Geis moved from Mainz to Schalke, both Bundesliga clubs confirmed on Tuesday.
After a long back and forth Schalke finally announced the signing of the 21 year old midfielder, who penned a four-year deal with the "Royal Blues".
"We are delighted that one of the much courted youngsters opted for our club. Johannes has enormous qualities, his dangerous free kick and his eye for unmarked teammates make him one of the best defensive midfielders in the Bundesliga," said Schalke's sporting director Horst Heldt.
Geis played two seasons at Mainz providing six goals and eleven assists in 75 appearances. He made two appearances in the UEFA Europa League.
"Schalke fascinates me, the stadium and the supporters. It is something special to play in this arena. The talks with Horst Held and coach Andre Breitenreiter convinced me. In Schalke something new develops and I would like to be part of it," said the new arrival.
Schalke completed the last Bundesliga season on the 6th place of the standings. After missing the club's main objective, the qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage, coach Robert Di Matteo resigned after just one season. Former Paderborn coach Andre Breitenreiter is now in charge for two years. Endi
