5 soldiers, 14 militants killed in Afghanistan within day

Xinhua, June 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Some 14 militants have been killed in Afghan army operations since early Monday while five army troops also died in clashes and landmine explosions within the same period, the country's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"A total of 14 terrorists were killed and five others were detained following army operations throughout the country over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates.

The army also seized weapons in addition to destroying several militants' hideouts, according to the statement.

The Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as they assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops since Jan. 1.

The Taliban respond by bombing and armed attacks.

On Monday, a local leader and a prominent pro-government figure named Dilawar Shah was killed along with his two sons following an armed attack in Tani district of eastern Khost province. Endi
