Int'l tourists visiting Spain increases 5.2 pct in first 5 months of 2015

Spain received a total of 22.5 million international tourists in the first five months of the year, according to data revealed Monday by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

The figure meant a 5.2 percent increase when compared with the same period a year earlier.

Tourists arriving from Britain increased by 3.3 percent in the first five months of the year in comparison with a year earlier to a total of 4.9 million. They accounted for 22 percent of the total.

The British were followed by German visitors whose arrivals reached 3.6 million, increasing by 3.1 percent in comparison with the same period a year earlier and representing 16.1 percent of the total.

The number of visitors from France increased 8.2 percent between January and May to a total of 3.7 million, representing 16.4 percent of the total.

Meanwhile, the northeastern region of Catalonia was chosen as the main destination and received 5.7 million international tourists, marking a 5.2 percent increase compared with the first five months of 2014.

Catalonia was followed by the Canary Islands and Andalusia that received 4.8 million and 3.1 million international tourists in the first five months of the year.

Spain is the third most visited country in the world after breaking a record high in the number of international tourists in 2014 when it received 64.99 million international visitors. The country is on the path of setting a new record for tourist arrivals this year. Endit
