Chinese Yu Yangyi leads Capablanca tournament in Cuba

With three out of five wins under his belt Chinese Grandmaster (GM) Yu Yangyi leads the Elite Group in the 50th edition of the Capablanca Memorial tournament in Cuba.

Saturday is Yu's only day off from the tournament which was founded in 1962.

With 2,715 Elo points, Yu secured his third consecutive victory on Friday defeating Russian GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (2,720 Elo points). After the victory, Yu has now accumulated 4.5 out of the 5 possible points available in the first round of the competition.

The 21-year-old Chinese student is participating in the Capablanca contest for the first time. In the tournament he has already beaten the Cubans Leinier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon and drew against the Russian Dmitry Andreikin and the Ukranian Pavel Eljanov.

Following Yu in the competition's ranking in descending order is Dominguez (2,746), followed by Eljanov (2,718) and Andreikin (2,718) all with 2.5 points.

Bruzon (2,677) is in 5th place and Nepomniachtchi is in last place having only won two games out of five.

The tournament will continue on Sunday with games between Andreikin-Yu, Nepomniachtchi-Eljanov and Bruzon-Dominguez.

The Capablanca contest is considered as the most important chess competition in Latin America. In this edition of the tournament there is also a Premier Group which includes nine GMs and a Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) Master and there is also an Open Group. In the whole competition, 173 players from 29 countries have come to Havana to compete. Endi
