Al-Shabaab suspect behind foiled Kenyan military camp attack nabbed

Kenya's anti-terrorism police said Saturday they have arrested one Al-Shabaab suspect related to the attack on a military camp in the country's coastal region last week.

Inspector General of Police said security officers had arrested the suspect in Voi town near Mombasa, whom they believe is behind a foiled raid at military base Lamu county last Sunday, in which at least 15 Al-Shabaab gunmen were killed.

"We have one suspect believed to have fled with bullet wounds during the shootout. He was arrested while seeking treatment at a hospital in Voi. The police are still interrogating him," Boinett told journalists in Mombasa

This comes just a day after the police released pictures of 38 terror suspects who are believed to be behind the attack.

Among those in the list is a German, Ahmed Mueller, alias Ahmed Khaled. He is described as a key figure in Al-Shabaab and reported to be the mastermind of last year's Mpeketoni attack in which more than 60 people were killed.

"He is one of the few Western foreign fighters in Al-Shabaab who survived Ahmed Godane's purge. There are indications that he could have been involved in the Mpeketoni attack of June 2014," the Interior ministry said in a statement received on Saturday. "He is currently on the run, probably injured after the attempted attack of Baure military camp in Lamu."

Most of the listed suspects are believed to be battle-hardened, having frequently fought on the frontline with Al-Shabaab militias.

Sources said the pictures were apparently retrieved from the Al- Shabaab camera that was filming their foiled ambush.

The Somalia-based militant group has launched series of attacks in Kenya's coastal and northeastern region since Kenya sent its military into Somalia in 2011 to fight the Al-Qaida linked group.
