Xinhua, June 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 33 people have died after consuming spurious liquor in Mumbai, a senior police official said Friday.

"Nearly 50 people consumed spurious liquor at a slum in Malad late Wednesday night. They were all admitted to a hospital after they complained of vomiting and stomach pain," he said.

While 20 people died within hours, 13 more succumbed late Thursday night, the official said, adding that 10 more are in a critical condition at hospitals.

Police have so far arrested three persons in connection with the tragedy and started a manhunt to nab others involved, he said.

Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, the capital of which is Mumbai, has ordered a probe into the incident.

Hundreds of people die in India every year after consuming hooch or spurious liquor that is available at cheap rates. Endi
