Ukrainian Parliament dismisses top security chief

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Ukrainian Parliament on Thursday relieved Valentyn Nalyvaychenko of his post as head of the Ukrainian Security Service, the parliament press service said.

With at least 226 votes needed, 248 lawmakers out of the 364 presented in the assembly supported the resolution to dismiss Nalyvaychenko, the press service said in a statement.

The resolution did not provide any details about the reasons for the dismissal, which was requested by President Petro Poroshenko. But local media reported that Nalyvaychenko had requested to leave his position as the top security chief to focus on political activities.

Nalyvaychenko, 49, a veteran diplomat, was appointed as head of the Security Service in February 2014, shortly after the overthrow of then President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled the country after massive protests. Endi
