Nikkei drops below 20,000 on strong yen, Greece fears

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks dropped 1.13 percent Thursday, with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index ending below 20, 000 for the first time in one month as the yen's firmer and concerns over the risk of a Greek default dampened market sentiment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 228.45 points, from Wednesday at 19,990.82, a level not seen since May 18. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 17.04 points, or 1.04 percent, to 1,616.66.

Decliners were led by oil and coal products, insurance and air transport issues.

The turnover was 2,300.67 billion yen (about 18.64 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
