Iraqi PM in Tehran seeking closer neighborly "strategic" ties

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Iran's capital Tehran on Wednesday for talks, mulling ways to fight against terrorism, official IRNA news agency reported.

Al-Abadi will hold talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani on regional and international developments as well as fighting terrorism, according to the report.

During Al-Abadi's first visit to Iran last October, Iranian officials reassured him that Tehran would give full support to the war-torn country against terrorists.

Iraqi President Fuad Masum also said in May that relations between the two neighboring countries were "strategic." Iran was the first country which helped Iraq in fighting the terrorists of the Islamic State (IS), Masum said.

Iran has forged close ties with Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Endit
