1 soldier killed, 8 wounded in S. Philippine bomb explosion

One soldier was killed and eight others were wounded as Abu Sayyaf militants detonated an improvised bomb remotely Tuesday morning in a remote village of south Philippine province of Basilan, local security officials said.

Security officials said the troops under the 18th Infantry Battalion were on road security on board a small military truck when the Abu Sayyaf militants exploded an improvised explosive device (IED) in the village of Tipo-Tipo Proper in Tipo-Tipo town about 8 a.m. local time.

Ensign Chester Ian Ramos, spokesman of Joint Task Group ZamBaSulta, said the powerful explosion failed to hit the military vehicle.

"But the shrapnel of the bomb exploded and caught up with our troops aboard the vehicle," Ramos said.

He said bomb was rigged by the Abu Sayyaf Group under Mussana Jamiri and Furuji Indama on the road.

The injured soldiers were sent to a military hospital for treatment.

The bomb attack came barely two hours after President Benigno Aquino III attended the ceremonial decommissioning of 75 firearms from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Central Mindanao.
