UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Monday "strongly" condemned deadly suicide bombings in N' Djamena, the capital of Chad, earlier in the day, reiterating that "States must ensure that all measures taken to address the terrorist threat of Boko Haram comply with all their obligations under international humanitarian, human rights and refugee law."
"The secretary-general strongly condemns the bombings in N' Djamena today, which reportedly killed more than 25 people and injured dozens of others," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesman here. "He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Chad. He wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack."
The secretary-general stressed that "States must ensure that all measures taken to address the terrorist threat of Boko Haram comply with all their obligations under international humanitarian, human rights and refugee law," said the statement.
While praising Chad for its courageous role in the fight against Boko Haram, Ban reiterated the importance of enhanced collaboration among countries in West and Central Africa to more effectively combat the threat of Boko Haram. He welcomed positive developments on the operationalization of the Multi-National Joint Task Force.
More than 100 people were also injured in the suicide attacks in the Chadian capital, reports said, adding that attackers on motorcycles blew themselves up outside two police buildings.
The Chadian government blamed Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram, but the group has not commented, said the reports.
Boko Haram gunmen have previously been active around Lake Chad close to the Nigerian border. They have continued to stage deadly attacks in Nigeria. Endite
