Finnish mum gets life sentence for killing five newborns

Xinhua, June 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

A court in Oulu, Northern Finland, on Monday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five infants.

The woman gave birth to the babies in her residences between 2005 and 2013.

After birth she left the babies without care and later deposited the corpses in refrigerators and basement.

The situation was uncovered in June 2014, when outsiders complained about the odour in a basement deposit area.

The woman told the court she had thought the children were stillborn.

Experts heard by the court said a child can survive without care at least three days.

Giving birth at home is very rare in Finland, a country that boasts good prenatal and maternity care. Finland has also a fairly liberal abortion legislation allowing abortion on social grounds such as the life situation.

The woman was employed in the restaurant sector. Endit
