(Recast) Sudan's al-Bashir has left S. Africa: spokesman

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Monday left South Africa for Khartoum after he attended the 25th summit of the African Union (AU), according to a government spokesman.

"The president has left Johannesburg more than an hour ago and he will arrive at Khartoum airport at 6:30 p.m. local time (15:30 GMT)," Ahmed Bilal Osman, Sudan's information minister and government spokesman, told Xinhua.

Al-Bashir's trip to South Africa has sparked a controversy as South Africa is a signatory of the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which in March 2009, issued an arrest warrant against him for allegedly committing war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region.

Khartoum has condemned the ICC ruling and the arrest warrant.

On Sunday, a judge at a Pretoria High Court issued an order preventing the Sudanese leader from leaving the country.

Al-Bashir arrived in Johannesburg on Saturday evening to attend the AU summit. Endit
