Senior Afghan Taliban leader killed in Pakistan

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior Afghan Taliban leader in the Pakistani border city of Peshawar, the Taliban said on Monday.

Maulvi Mir Ahmad Gul Hashmi, the Taliban shadow governor for eastern Nangarhar province, was critically injured in Peshawar on Sunday and died of wounds later. He has been vigorously involved in waging fighting in the Nangarhar that borders with Pakistan.

The Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the assassination.

"We announce with great pain that a senior Jihadi figure and a senior leader and in-charge of Nangarar province Mir Ahmad Gul Hashmi has been killed by the enemies of Islam," the spokesman said in a statement.

The spokesman did not clarify where Maulvi Gul came under the attack. However, a Taliban source said he was killed in Peshawar.

Though no group has claimed the responsibility, Taliban routinely blame the Afghan intelligence agents for such killings.

A former Taliban minister Abdul Raqeeb was killed in Peshawar last year. Endi
