Portuguese airline captain suspended for allegedly violating ethical rules

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portuguese airline TAP Portugal has suspended a captain who was allegedly behind the organization of a 10-day strike which took place in May, local media reported on Sunday.

An inquiry was also opened due to the captain, Paulo Lino Rodrigues, allegedly violating ethical rules for having taken up office at the Pilots of Civil Aviation Syndicate (SPAC) where he was remunerated.

The aviation syndicate denied in a statement that Rodrigues was involved in the negotiations or organization of the strike, saying SPAC took "sole responsibility."

According to newspaper Publico, Rodrigues will be suspended at least until the inquiry is concluded, and disciplinary proceedings could lead the captain to be fired permanently for misconduct.

The stoppage last month was organized by trade unions against plans to privatize the airline and according to SPAC led to losses amounting to up to 30 million euros (33.6 million U.S. dollars).

A controlling stake of TAP was on Thursday sold to a consortium led by JetBlue founder David Neeleman. Endit
