Guam get first World Cup qualifier win

Xinhua, June 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Minnows Guam claimed their first victory in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Thursday when the tiny island in West Pacific defeated Turkmenistan 1-0 by an own goal.

Turkmenistan defender Serdar Annaorazov's header gave Guam the surprise win in the 14th minute.

Guam is a United States island territory which has a population of less than 200,000. With the victory, Guam climbed to the top of Group D in the second round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers temporarily.

The result was a huge improvement from Guam's last outing in the World Cup qualifiers in 2000 when they were beaten 19-0 by Iran and 16-0 by Tajikistan in centralised matches in Tabriz, Iran.

In the second round of the Asian qualifying matches, 40 teams are separated into eight groups, with the top teams of every group and four best teams entering the final stage of qualifiers. Endi
