Fiji ready for MERS virus threat

Xinhua, June 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fiji has a response plan ready to track down the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus should it reach the Pacific island country's shores, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) reported Thursday.

Sunil Chandra, spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, told the FBC that the ministry was working with a multi-agency task force and has developed a response plan.

Although the risk of the virus entering Fiji is "very low," the ministry is not taking it lightly, said the report.

Surveillance at the border and the ports of entry has been increased, Chandra said.

In South Korea, over 120 people have been diagnosed with the MERS since the first case was discovered on May 20, with the latest death toll standing at 10.

There are direct flights between Fiji and South Korea. Endi
