Date announced for Barcelona presidential elections

Xinhua, June 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The elections to elect a new President for FC Barcelona will be held on July 18th, announced the club.

The date was made public just 24 hours after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned as President, in order to present his candidacy at the forthcoming elections.

Bartomeu was vice-president under Sandro Rosell and took over the leadership of the club in January 2014 after Rosell stepped down over irregularities in the signing of Brazilian striker Neymar.

Both Rosell, Bartomeu and the club itself face trial over those irregularities, but Bartomeu is nevertheless in a strong position to win any election after overseeing this season's treble, which was won under coach Luis Enrique.

Bartomeu's last act before resigning was to see Luis Enrique extend his contract with the club until 2017, while several players such as Dani Alves, Jordi Alba and Pedro Rodriguez has also committed their futures to the club.

So far only Tony Freixa, who was adviser to the club under the presidency of Joan Laporta and Club Secretary and Spokesman under Rosell, has presented an opposition candidacy, but there is expectation to see whether or not the colorful and controversial Laporta could bid to return to the club. Endi
