Tokyo shares open higher following U.S. gains

Tokyo shares opened higher on Thursday as sentiment here was boosted by overnight gains in the U. S. market and a halt on the yen's advance.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 169.79 points, or 0.85 percent, from Wednesday to 20,216.15.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 16.78 points, or 1.03 percent, to 1, 645.01. Endi
