Austrian Chancellor calls for removal of tent accommodations for refugees

Xinhua, June 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann Tuesday called on state governments to take down tents used to house refugees in the wake of a massive surge in their numbers and establish more positions in fixed quarters.

"Create sufficient spaces and do away with the tents," he said.

He acknowledged that many states had already established more quarters, but that there were still not enough places. He added it would be best for the "credibility" of Austria's refugee policy if states could meet agreed-upon quota intake numbers.

Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner had earlier in the day pointed to the June 19 deadline, whereby states that do not meet their refugee intake quota will have available army barracks used as accommodations for refugees. She added the states have already put in "much effort."

Defense Minister Gerald Klug again stated the offer of use of the barracks as accommodation is still on the table, and reiterated his view that fixed accommodation would provide much better living conditions than the tents. Endit
