Slovak-Polish gas pipeline receives support from EU

Xinhua, June 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The project of Slovak-Polish gas pipeline link has received financial support from the European Union for preparatory studies and engineering activities, confirmed spokesperson of Slovak gas transport system operator Eustream Vahram Chuguryan on Monday.

Eustream and Polish gas transport operator Gaz-System S.A. have signed a tripartite agreement on financial assistance with the EU's Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) concerning the project.

"The project has received the maximum level of financial assistance from the EU for a preparatory work, reaching 50 percent of the overall cost. Eustream has received 2.33 million euro (2.61 million U.S. Dollar) and Gaz-System 2.26 million euro (2.53 million U.S. Dollar)," stressed Chuguryan.

The European Commission described the project of Slovak-Polish gas connection as a 'project of common interest' in October 2013.

The EU believes that the gas connection will contribute towards diversification of gas sources and routes in the region, as well as stability of gas supplies for both countries.

"The project should significantly boost energy security in the entire region of Central and Southeastern Europe by increasing the diversification of gas supplies and reducing the level of dependence on gas supplies from a single source," stated Chuguryan.

The total length of the link will be 164 kilometres, of which 106 km will be in Slovakia and connection should be put into service as of 2019. Endit
