India orders testing of all noodles, pasta brands available in market

Indian food safety authorities Monday ordered testing of all noodles, pasta and macaroni brands available in the market, days after they banned Nestle's best- selling Maggi noodles for being "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India directed all states and central government-controlled territories to collect samples of noodles and pasta brands and test them.

"Various test results on Maggi and some other similar products have raised serious health concerns. In view of the same, it would be advisable to draw regulatory samples for similar products ... These samples should be sent to the authorised labs for testing," food safety chief Y.S. Malik said.

The move came in the wake of tests that showed Maggi noodles contained taste enhancer mono sodium glutamate and lead in excess of the permissible limits. Nestle has also withdrawn its products following the controversy. Endi
