Referee made brave decison, says Hermann

Xinhua, June 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Canada coach John Herdman praised the referee for a "brave decision" that gifted the home side a winning penalty against China in injury time of the Women's World Cup opener here on Saturday.

"I would say well done to the referee, she made a very brave decision," the 39-year-old English said at the post match press conference.

China coach Hao Wei questioned the referee's decision, saying "I am not sure that was a penalty."

The hosts were awarded the penalty when Adriana Leon fell after making contact with Chinese midfielder Zhao Rong.

Sinclair, who was isolated upfront throughout the game by China's mass defence, made no mistake from the spot.

Herdman, who celebrated immediately after the referee pointed to the spot, said he was sure "one woman" will step forward to clinch the victory.

"When that call went in, I nearly cried out. I am an emotional person," he said.

"We cerebrated as we scored, because we know there is one woman in this team could bring us victory at this time," he added. Endi
