About 1000 Syrian refugees enter Turkey in fresh exodus from Kurds-IS fighting

Xinhua, June 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Around 1000 Syrian refugees crossed into Turkey Thursday fleeing clashes between Kurdish fighters and Islamic State (IS) militants in Tel Abyad of Syria, private Dogan News Agency reported.

The Syrian refugees waited for a couple of days on the Syrian side of the border until Turkish authorities allowed them to cross the Akcakale border of southern Sanliurfa province through a secure corridor, said the report.

The refugees were then sent to rest areas after undergoing health inspections and registration, the report said.

According to the latest figures from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate, the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey had exceeded 900,000 in April.

Turkey, once an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, is now a fierce opponent of his government, supporting opposition attempts to topple him. Endit
