Soldier killed, another injured in clash with rebels

One soldier was killed and another was injured in clash with leftist New People's Army (NPA) on Saturday in the central Philippine province of Sorsogon, the military said.

Captain Mardjorie Paimela Panesa, public affairs officer of the Army's 9th Infantry Division, said the clash occurred at around 8: 30 a.m. with fewer than 10 NPA members and lasted for five minutes.

He said the pursuit operation was underway. The number of casualties on NPA's side was not immediately known.

The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been fighting a leftist insurgency in the Philippines since 1969. Endi
