Vietnamese volleyball team was praised after ranking the fifth place, the highest ever result at the Asian Women' s Volleyball Championship.

The Vietnam national women' s volleyball team on Thursday finished in fifth position after winning 3-1 over Japan at the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship held in China' s Tianjin.

Previously Vietnam twice ranked the sixth in the 2003 and 2013 events.

"Finishing the Asian tournament at the fifth place was beyond our expectation as the team is under the process of recruiting new young players," Tran Duc Phan, General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation said on local Thanh Nien (Young People) online newspaper on Friday.

"I hope that the Vietnamese players can keep their good form at the upcoming 18th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games," Phan said.

Sharing the same view, Nguyen Ba Nghi, head of Vietnamese delegation at the event said Vietnam had a successful tournament when ranking at the fifth place for the first time.

"The team has many new young members, who need to practise more in the future," Nghi added.

The Vietnamese players also received congratulations and praises from local fans for their performance.

"I am a big fan of volleyball. Congratulations to Vietnamese players! I wish you to have a good SEA Games competition," reader Vu Dai Phong commented on VNExpress online newspaper on Friday.

"You bring glory to Vietnamese volleyball," another reader wrote on VNExpress.

"Congratulations to Vietnamese women volleyball players. The result showed the progress of Vietnamese women volleyball. I hope that the team can win a gold medal at the upcoming SEA Games after seven silver ones," reader Ha Thien said.

Other volleyball fans expressed their hope that the team can jump to the 28th place from the current 35th place in the International Volleyball Federation FIVB ranking to have a chance to compete at the World Grand Prix.

After the Asian Women' s Volleyball Championship tournament, the Vietnamese team will fly to Singapore to compete in the 28th SEA Games. Endi
