Senior Chinese official highlights online petitions

Senior Chinese security official Meng Jianzhu highlighted online petitions during his visit to State Bureau for Letters and Calls Thursday.

Meng, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said petition system is an important channel for the CPC and government to understand the pubic's concerns and keep close ties to the people.

He urged officials to establish a sound online petition system to save the public trouble when they make their complaints. Complaints forwarded by petition bureaus should be handled properly and in time, Meng said.

Online petitioning should be more open, transparent and efficient, so as to decrease the cost for petitioners.

The bureau started receiving petitions submitted via the Internet on July 1, 2013, at www.gjxfj.gov.cn/wsxf. People can lodge complaints when their rights are infringed upon as a result of an abuse of power by authorities, enterprises, and public institutions.

China's petitioning system dates back to the early 1950s and has played a major role in public supervision over Party and state organs. Endi
