ETA arsenal uncovered in France

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

A joint operation by Spanish and French security forces in the south of France led to the discovery on Thursday of an "important arsenal" belonging to Basque separatist group ETA in the town of Biarritz.

Spanish security forces confirmed this could be one of the most important caches which is still in the group's power, even though the group called a permanent ceasefire shortly before the November 2011 general elections.

One person, a French woman, was arrested and charged with collaborating with the group, who were responsible for over 820 deaths between the 1960s and 2011.

The Spanish interior ministry confirmed the arrest was part of an ongoing operation in the South of France investigating the "technical-logistical structure of the terrorist band."

So far, no further details on the number of weapons that were recovered have been announced, although French anti-terrorism forces confirmed Tuesday that at least 250 pistols and almost 60,000 bullets were still missing following a robbery in southern France in 2006. Endit
