River Plate, Internacional advance to Libertadores last four

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

River Plate advanced to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday by securing a 3-1 aggregate victory over Brazil's Cruzeiro in the quarterfinals.

Carlos Sanchez, Jonathan Maidana and Teofilo Gutierrez were all on target as the Argentine team won their second-leg match 3-0 at Cruzeiro's Mineirao stadium.

The Brazilian side were reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute when Gabriel Xavier was shown a straight red card for a crude tackle on Gonzalo Martinez.

In the semifinals, River Plate will meet the winners of Thursday's remaining quarterfinal second leg between Argentina's Racing Club and Guarani in Buenos Aires. The Paraguayan outfit won the first leg 1-0.

In Wednesday's other match, Brazil's Internacional beat Colombian side Independiente Santa Fe 2-0 to win the tie 2-1. Inter will confront Mexico's Tigres in the semifinals. Endi
