Georgia celebrates Independence Day

Xinhua, May 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Georgia celebrated Independence Day on Tuesday to commemorate the adoption of the Act of Independence on May 26, 1918.

By tradition, Georgians held various festivals and commemorative activities in the capital of Tbilisi and 25 other cities across the country to mark the special day.

Government ministries, universities and major companies organized exhibitions and entertainment events to celebrate Georgia's latest development.

In downtown Tbilisi, a grand gala attracted thousands of people, while sporting events like basketball and soccer games, as well as art shows, were arranged for public pleasure. Folk singers and dancers marched through the streets before gathering for a carnival on the main boulevard of Rustaveli.

Military equipment, including battle tanks, armored vehicles and other armaments, was also on display in central Tbilisi.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili addressed the people at a ceremony in downtown Tbilisi, vowing to use all means to defend national independence and make the country stronger.

"We have ... a responsibility before our future generations. We must leave them a united, strong and fair state," he said. Endi
