Morocco has foiled an attempt to smuggle some 1.35 tons of cannabis into Europe, a local radio said on Monday.
The seized cannabis was hidden in a twin-engine boat near a local beach in the north of the country, the radio said.
"A surveillance operation in the area of Cabo Negro (about 291 km away from the capital Rabat) culminated with the abortion of the smuggling attempt off the coast of Marina Smir late Sunday and the seizure of the illicit substance," it added.
Despite efforts by the authorities in the past decade to crack down on cannabis farming, Morocco still remains a big producer.
The authorities said more than 700,000 Moroccans depend on cannabis production, which is concentrated in the northern Rif mountains. Endit
