Avai upset Flamengo in Brazil's Serie A

Newly promoted Avai rose to ninth in Brazil's Serie A standings on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Rio de Janeiro giants Flamengo.

Midfielder Hugo stuck both goals after halftime for the hosts while Gabriel netted for the visitors.

The result at the Ressacada stadium in Florianopolis left five-time league champions Flamengo 17th in the standings with just one point from three matches.

Sport rose to the top of the table after Neto's 29th-minute strike gave them a 1-0 home victory over Coritiba.

The Recife-based club has seven points from their opening three matches to be above Goias and Corinthians on goal difference.

In other results on Sunday, Goias won 1-0 at Palmeiras, Atletico Paranaense overcame Atletico Mineiro 1-0, Chapecoense beat Santos 1-0, Corinthians held Fluminense to a 0-0 draw and Ponte Preta drew 1-1 at Cruzeiro. Endi
