Ireland set to approve same-sex marriage: media

Xinhua, May 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ireland's same-sex marriage referendum was set to be approved, according to initial results on Saturday.

The first official constituency result was declared in west Ireland's Sligo-North Leitrim with Yes on 53.57 percent and No on 46.43 percent, state broadcaster RTE reported.

The biggest Yes support will be in Dublin, where it is topping 70 percent in some areas.

RTE quoted Ireland's Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney as saying that the referendum will carry in Dublin with a 70-30 Yes majority.

Coveney said other cities in Ireland, including Limerick, Galway and Waterford, would be close at 60-40.

But RTE said a No vote is possible in north Ireland's Roscommon South-Leitrim.

The official national result is expected to be announced before 6 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Saturday. Ballot boxes opened in 27 centers nationwide at 9 a.m.

Large crowds were gathering in Dublin Castle to hear the final result, which will be a resounding Yes vote. Endit
