Burundi media boss heard over airing coup message

Xinhua, May 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The manager of Renaissance Radio and Television Innocent Muhozi was Friday heard by the Burundian Attorney General over broadcasting the message of plot leader of the failed coup on May 13.

"The prosecutor wanted to know why we broadcast General Niyombare's message. He also wanted to know that I have particular relationships with the failed coup plotters," said Muhozi after the hearing.

He indicated that the hearing was done "freely and correctly" and in a relaxed mood.

"I answered all the questions. It is up to the prosecutor to decide," Muhozi said.

Muhozi, who had a lawyer during the hearing, was allowed to go back home.

On May 13, a group of soldiers and policemen headed by former intelligence chief Godefroid Niyombare announced that they had overthrown Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza and his government.

One day later, the coup plot failed and some mutineers were arrested while others surrendered.

The coup plot happened when Nkurunziza was in Tanzania to attend a regional summit on Burundi. Endi
