Latvian right-wing party formally nominates president candidate

The right-wing National Alliance, a member of Latvia's government coalition, on Friday officially nominated Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice, as a candidate in this year's presidential election.

The application on Levits' nomination, which was submitted to the parliament presidium, had the signatures of parliament speaker Inara Murniece and two other leading members of the National Alliance, as well as lawmakers from other the opposition leftist For Latvia from the Heart (NSL) and the ruling center-right Unity party.

Levits is the fourth candidate to be formally nominated for the Latvian presidency.

The three rival candidates nominated for the Latvian presidency include Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis, nominated jointly by the ruling centrist Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) and the ruling center-right Unity, MP Sergejs Dolgopolovs, nominated by the opposition leftist Harmony party, and MP Martins Bondars, the candidate from the opposition Latvian Bloc of Regions (LRA).

The official nomination of presidential candidates which kicked off on Tuesday, May 19, will continue until Sunday, May 24.

The presidential election in Latvia will take place on June 3, 2015. Endit
