Uganda's U-23 travels for Olympic qualifier away to Rwanda

Xinhua, May 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda's U-23 team will miss four professional players when they face Rwanda on Saturday in a 2016 Olympic CAF U-23 Championship qualifier tie.

Head coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic told Xinhua on Friday that although he had summoned five professionals ahead of the first leg encounter in Kigali, Tunisia based Junior Yunus Ssentamu, Richard Kasagga, Dennis Iguma (Lebanon) and Khalid Aucho (Kenya) will not make the trip because of club commitments.

Sredojevic said before the team left on Friday that although his team will miss the services of the trio, he is still optimistic they will get a good result in Rwanda.

"We do not underrate Rwanda who ejected Somalia in the preliminary stage of the qualifiers, but I respect my players more and know they will deliver," added the Serbian born coach.

Goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola who helped Sudan's El merriekh reach the group stages of the lucrative CAF Champions League is part of the team which will be struggling to get a morale boosting away win before the return leg on May 30.

"We need to get a good result in Kigali so that we make work easier in Kampala," explained striker Farouk Miya who won the 2014/2015 Azam Uganda Premier League title with SC Vipers early this week.

Uganda will face Egypt in the last phase of the CAF U-23 Championship qualifier. The winning team will qualify for the African event to take place in Senegal in December and the best three teams will qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. Endi
