Zimbabwe to host African aviation conference

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zimbabwe will next week host the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) conference to deliberate on challenges facing the continent's aviation sector.

Formed in 1964, the AFCAC is a specialized African Union (AU) implementing agency for the 1999 Yamoussoukro Decision that seeks to promote African aviation development through creation of an enabling environment for African airlines.

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) chief executive David Chawota said the meeting will run from May 25-29 in the resort town of Victoria Falls to discuss the state of Africa's aviation sector, challenges and solutions to ensure aviation growth in Africa.

"The meeting will discuss Africa's aviation as well as programs and policies that would have been adopted with regards to aviation and methods of implementing the policies," he said.

Poor safety standards, reluctance by states to open up their skies, restrictive visa regimes, high operational costs, infrastructure bottlenecks and political instability have been cited as some of the challenges hampering growth of Africa's aviation sector.

With less than 100 airlines, Africa contributes a mere 2.3 percent to global passenger traffic. Endi
