Powerful earthquake strikes Solomon Islands

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands on Thursday, Geoscience Australia said, however no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake was centered near the Santa Cruz island chain, at approximately 10 km deep, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A Geoscience Australia spokesman said shallow earthquakes in this area are well known.

"Although large, there are no reports of damage coming from this event," he said.

Thursday morning's earthquake was in the same location as the 7. 9-magnitude earthquake that caused widespread damage leaving 10 people dead and thousands homeless in 2013. Endi
