Majority of Austrians support permanent EU rescue mission for refugees: survey

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A new survey from the Austrian Society for European Politics (OeGfE) showed that 69 per cent of Austrians support a permanent EU rescue mission solution for refugees in trouble at sea, particularly in light of recent tragedies in the Mediterranean.

OeGfE Secretary General Paul Schmidt stated in a press release to accompany the release of the survey Wednesday that 71 percent of respondents also called for refugee intake quotas in the EU.

Additionally 78 percent of the more than 500 respondents aged 16 and over gave their support for the establishment of asylum centres in Northern Africa, while 52 percent of respondents agreed with the introduction of further legal means by which refugees may come to Europe.

49 percent of the respondents also supported an increase in Austrian development aid to improve the living conditions in the poorer countries in question.

Schmidt said the results show Austrians support new means of dealing with refugees and asylum seekers, something he said the European Agenda on Migration is also working towards. Endit
