Burundi postpones legislative, communal election

Xinhua, May 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Burundian legislative and communal elections due on May 26 have been postponed to June 5, a decree signed by Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza said Wednesday.

The period for the electoral campaign for both polls has been extended from May 23 to June 2.

Meanwhile, protests against the third term bid of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza are in their fourth week in various neighborhoods of the Burundian capital Bujumbura.

On May 13, a group of soldiers and policemen headed by Major General Godefroid Niyombare staged a coup against President Nkurunziza and his government, but the coup plot failed one day later.

Most coup plotters were arrested, but General Niyombare has not yet been arrested.

After the first polls that have been postponed for June 5, the next poll - the presidential election is due on June 26. Endi
